CompSys was awarded a Phase I SBIR grant from NASA for technology related to securing data for space communications. NASA's vision of data exchange between space and ground nodes would involve the space network accessing public infrastructure such as the Internet. Hence, advanced security measures have to be developed to ensure information integrity and authentication. The proposed innovations in our work are:
1) A hierarchical security model, where each level has a different security requirement and varying capabilities.
2) An adaptive key management protocol suite that would cater to the security needs of the network at the various levels, and
3) A novel key management scheme that uses threshold cryptography and group key management concepts.
This work will be performed by the research team in the Embedded Wireless division of CompSys. Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Program is a government program designed to help small technology businesses while fulfilling some of the government's own research and development needs. The highly competitive program has 3 phases. The first is a startup phase where up to $100,000 is given for six months of support. The company must establish within those six months that their idea or technology is practical and feasible. In phase two, awards can reach $600,000 or more depending on the granting agency. It is in this phase that R&D work is performed, and the developer assesses the potential for a commercial application. Phase three is not SBIR funded, and involves moving the product from the lab to the marketplace.
